How I Lost 140 Pounds and Kept It Off For Three Decades

I was put on my first diet at the age of seven, and things went downhill from there. I became a  yo-yo dieter, gaining more every year, until, at the age of 33 and 330 pounds, I finally discovered the formula for success.

Then, in 1984, as a behavior therapist and addictions counselor, I discovered methods in behavioral psychology that enabled me to solve my weight problem for good. I lost 140 pounds, and I have maintained an ideal 180 lbs. ever since, for over 30 years. You may not have that much to lose, but  thousands of clients and readers have learned to apply my methods to solve their weight problem. Like learning to ride a bike or play the piano it’s not effortless, but there is no maybe about it. It works. I have never had a client not lose weight following what I teach.

I have volumes of information here at my website and I’ve written a book, now an eBook and audiobook, (listen to a sample of it here) that explains everything I teach my clients. I hope it can help you too.

Here’s some of what I learned:

1) To lose and manage weight, it requires more than just learning about the calories in food and what your body needs. You need to learn how to program yourself and master that part of yourself that manufactures your desires, urges, habits and feelings.

2) Acquiring the right habits is not a matter of intellect and will power. It is a result of training and conditioning in technique from the behavioral sciences. It is a matter of learning how to reprogram yourself, your habits and your feelings.

3) Diets and exercise crusades don’t work. Doing something for a while, even if you lose weight, and then going back to “normal”, will make you worse, not better.

4) Success comes not from denying yourself pleasure and good food, but by forming habits that are more pleasurable, with food that you really like that causes you to become healthy and fit instead of overweight.

You can become successful at permanent weight loss.

Yes, Your Stomach Actually Shrinks When You Diet!

Bill Anderson - Author of The Anderson Method book

Author Bill Anderson before and after his 140 pound weight loss.

(The author is a psychotherapist who lost 140 lbs. when he discovered his unique method, and he’s kept it off for over 25 years. Read about his method of fast permanent weight loss in his book, The Anderson Method.)

A reader has written in asking, “Does my stomach actually shrink after a few weeks of eating less, or is it all in my imagination?”

Much to my surprise, the answer is YES!, your stomach actually does shrink!

For years, the answer from all the experts has always been “no”, your stomach does not actually shrink.

My dietitians and physicians have always told me that this is an “old wives’ tale”, a myth that came about because after a while of eating less, we seem to get used to it. They said that the hunger that you got when you first “dieted” goes away after a few days, but it wasn’t from your stomach actually getting smaller. “It’s a matter of habituation”, they said. You also get a full feeling on less food than before, but “it’s not actually your stomach physically shrinking.  The new experience becomes our new normal and we get used to it”. According to them, our digestive system and appestat adjust to the new level of consumption, and now, when we’ve had the new normal amount or new normal of going without, our brain gives us the same messages it used to give us, but on less food. But the stomach physically shrinking? “No”, they scoffed, “just another silly myth lay people believe”.

It turns out they were wrong, at least about the stomach shrinking part.

Here’s the scoop: Researchers at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Department of Medicine and Psychiatry at St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital have actually measured the size of the stomachs of people before and after 4 weeks of eating less. They found that dieters had their stomachs shrink by 27-36%!

They inserted balloons into the empty stomachs of 25 obese volunteers and then filled them with water to measure the volume the stomach would hold. Then, a group of 14 of them went on restricted diets, reducing the amount of food they ate, and 9 did not. At the end of 4 weeks, they repeated the measuring procedure using the balloons. The non-dieters had no change in the volume their stomachs would hold, but the dieters’ stomachs would not hold what they used to. The volume their stomachs’ would hold had shrunk by 27 to 36%.

So, its true, your stomach actually does shrink after you eat less for a while.

Now that we have that settled, so what? If you want to lose weight, you still have to figure out what to do to get yourself to do that. That’s where I and my book come in. Read my book or listen to my audiobook and find out!

Bill Anderson on The Suncoast View!

Bill Anderson, LMHC, teaching about permanent weight loss on The Suncoast View.

I visited with Linda Carson and the rest of the ABC7 Suncoast View today to help Linda Carson with a refresher course in The Anderson Method. Linda had lost 73 pounds 10 years ago with my method and kept it off “easily” for years. Then life threw her some challenges that knocked her off course, and, as happens with some who have used my methods, she literally forgot what she did to be successful and gained some back. “What happened?” she said. So, we “rebooted” the Key Behaviors and she is feeling good again, losing weight and learning the value of the techniques she had lost touch with. Sometimes, we learn more from a relapse and recovery than we learned from the initial success.

Celebrating 27 and a Half Years Of Losing 140 Pounds!

As we begin 2012, I have, at age 62, now spent as much of my life at my ideal body weight as I did being obese, over 300 pounds as an adult. I can almost think of myself as a naturally thin person now!

I was an overweight kid, failing my first of a thousand diets at seven, the fattest kid in school almost every year and rejected by the Armed Services at 18 because of my weight. By the time I was thirty I was a veteran of every diet on the planet and a failure at more weight loss attempts than you can count. In my early thirties I had endured 27 and a half years of regular doses of misery because of those tribulations, between periods of trying not to think about it. The stories and insights I can tell you will fill volumes. If you’re overweight they would sound familiar and it might surprise you to learn that you are not alone in the way you’ve acted, thought and felt.

But now, I celebrate 27 and a half years of maintaining my ideal body weight! I found a way out of the misery of obesity. I haven’t been perfect, or free from having gained some at times that I had to beat back down, but I’ve been successful. I still love to eat, and truth be told, I’m better at it and enjoy it more than I ever did!

If you want to know how, I can tell you.

I just wanted to stop and mark milestone in my journey.
