Advice to anyone reluctant to try something they are not good at: “Anything worth doing is worth doing badly.” (Contrary to the usual “well”.) This is what we need to advise people, like our kids, our friends and ourselves, who are reluctant to do things because they are afraid of failing or looking bad.
The logic: If you are not trained and experienced in doing something difficult, you will not be good at it. The only way to get good at it is to learn from your mistakes, make adjustments, and practice until proficiency is accomplished.
If a thing is worth doing, it is worth going through this process where you must start out doing it badly.
